Laser Resurfacing

ABLATIVE LASER

This is a wounding laser that removes the thin outer layer of skin (epidermis) and heats the underlying skin (dermis), which stimulates the growth of new collagen fibers. As the epidermis heals and regrows, the treated area appears smoother and tighter. Types of ablative treatments include the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, the erbium laser and combination systems.

NONABLATIVE LASER

This is a non-wounding laser that stimulates collagen growth, which over time helps improve skin tone and texture. This approach can be done with various types of lasers as well as intense pulsed light (IPL) devices. Non-ablative laser resurfacing is less invasive and requires less recovery time than ablative laser resurfacing. While it’s less effective, it can yield beautiful results in the right patient.

Laser Resurfacing FAQ's

Get Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Resurfacing Below.

  • What conditions can the laser resurfacing treat?

Laser skin resurfacing treatments can improve:

    • Fine lines and wrinkles
    • Hyperpigmentation or discoloration
    • Uneven skin tone
    • Rough texture
    • Age spots or sun spots
    • Scars from acne or injury
    • Stretch marks
    • Loose skin
  • How long does treatment take and what can I expect?

One laser resurfacing treatment takes around 30-45 minutes, but can be more or less depending on the laser used and areas being treated. Ablative lasers, such as erbium and C02, may take a bit longer, will be more uncomfortable, and can have up to 2-3 weeks of downtime of varying intensities. Non-ablative lasers treatments have minimal discomfort and downtime - typically just slight redness or swelling for up to one week after.

  • Is laser resurfacing for me?

Like anything in life, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons, and to discuss in detail with an experienced practitioner before undergoing treatment. Here at Divine, we are dedicated to helping those who want to improve the appearance of the skin by offering highly skilled help and advice, tailor-made to their individual circumstances.

If this sounds like something you’d like to learn more about, contact us at (508) 627-0352 to schedule a consultation.

  • How do I know which laser is right for me?

We customize each treatment based on a patient’s individual needs. In some cases only a single treatment may be needed, while for others a series of treatments or a combination treatment may be recommended. The depth of treatment (and thus the downtime) depends upon the degree of resurfacing needed. Fine lines and mild skin tone unevenness may require a shallow treatment; however, deeper wrinkles, acne scars and more severe laxity may necessitate a deeper treatment. This will be discussed at your consultation.

  • Is laser resurfacing painful?

Depending on the laser used resurfacing can be uncomfortable. We will always apply topical numbing cream prior to all C02 laser treatments. For all ablative laser treatments, we will use a Zimmer chiller to cool the skin during the procedure. ProNox nitrous oxide is also available upon request.
